The 2011 Combat Tournament took place today in Seward.  This is the largest armed forces event in Alaska.  Over 250 soldiers geared up for a day of halibut fishing aboard Seward’s charter fleet.  The Sea Quest lead the pack after the shotgun start at 6am.  We steered East toward the island of Montague but stopped shy at Elrington island.  The fishing was hot and heavy all day, Great bite but no size to any of the fish.  We were looking for something over 100lb but the fish were not taking to any of the King Salmon carcasses we were presenting…some days the big ones don’t bite.  We made a second move around 10:30 in search of some larger halibut but again nothing over 35lb was landed.  We did however manage to land a few very nice Yelloweye while sitting on one of our rock piles.  The weather was in our favor coming down consistently from a NE 15 to a variable 10 with seas around 4′.  We had a great time with the soldiers and appreciate everything they do for our country.  We were honored to have participated in the 2011 tournament…see you next year guys.

]The Sea Quest will have another trip on Saturday, May 28th.  The weather is looking good with variable 10kt of wind and seas 5′.  Tides are improving this week so better fishing should be right around the corner.  There is still room on Monday’s trip, May 30th call (907)224-BOOK
